Feed Gas Requirements

Fermentation gas: Typically requires ≥ 98.5% CO₂, with upstream foam separation and water washing as needed.

Biogas upgrading off-gas: Streams containing 95.0%–98.0% CO₂ may require an additional PSA or membrane enrichment module. Estimated additional energy consumption is 12–18 kWh/t, depending on feed conditions and configuration.

Non-condensable gases: Combined O₂, N₂, and Ar should not exceed 1.5% by volume for standard condenser configurations.

Particle removal: A 5 μm pre-filter is required upstream of the main compressor.

CO₂ Liquefaction Process

Compression: Oil-free reciprocating or dry screw compressors raise the gas pressure, with intercoolers removing heat and condensed moisture.

Organic removal: Activated carbon beds reduce VOCs, hydrocarbons, and odor-causing compounds.

Desulfurization: An optional treatment stage removes sulfur compounds from feed streams that require it.

Dehydration: Twin-tower TSA molecular sieve dryers reduce moisture to the specified dew point.

Filtration: A 0.1 μm filter captures desiccant fines before the cryogenic section.

Liquefaction: Mechanical refrigeration cools the purified CO₂ to the design temperature for condensation.

Purging and sub-cooling: Non-condensable gases are removed to support product purity and CO₂ recovery.

Factory Testing

Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) may include pressure vessel hydrostatic tests, leak checks, electrical continuity tests, PLC interlock simulations, and compressor trial runs.

Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) verifies agreed performance under specified operating conditions.

Contractual guarantees may cover:
Liquid CO₂ capacity within ±3% of the agreed value.
Shaft power not exceeding the contractual value by more than 3%.
CO₂ purity of at least 99.90% by volume under agreed test conditions.

FAQ

Q: How much electricity should I budget per tonne of liquid CO₂?

A: Total consumption, including cooling water pumps, dryers, and auxiliaries, is typically 160–190 kWh/t, compared with 135–140 kWh/t of shaft energy. At USD 0.08/kWh, that equals roughly USD 13–15 per tonne.

Q: What CO₂ recovery rate does the unit achieve?

A: The typical recovery rate is 98–99% with 99% pure feed CO₂. Some CO₂ is lost through the non-condensable purge. Recovery drops by about 1% for every additional 1% of O₂, N₂, and Ar in the feed.

Q: How is food-grade quality verified?

A: Online analyzers monitor oxygen and dew point. Batch samples are tested by GC-FID/FPD for hydrocarbons, benzene, acetaldehyde, and sulfur compounds. Independent laboratory reports are also available for each batch upon request.

Q: How long do the activated carbon and molecular sieve last?

A: Activated carbon typically lasts 1–2 years when processing fermentation gas. The molecular sieve lasts 3–5 years.

Q: Why must feed CO₂ be above 98% for standard configurations?

A: Non-condensable gases do not liquefy at –22°C to –26°C. Higher levels therefore require more purging and result in greater CO₂ losses.

Q: Which model should I choose for my plant?

A: Select a unit sized for approximately 90% of your average CO₂ flow, since fermentation gas production varies. A brewery producing 1,000,000 HL/year typically needs a CLE-0500 to CLE-1500. A bioethanol plant producing 100,000 t/year of ethanol typically needs a CLE-3000 or larger.

Q: What certifications and materials come with the unit?

A: Product-contact parts are made from SS304 or SS316L. Pressure vessels can be built to ASME VIII Div. 1, GB 150, or PED requirements under an ISO 9001 quality system. Certificate numbers can be verified with the issuing body.
